Position Overview

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Tunnel Superintendent is responsible for the overall supervisoryresponsibility for planning, coordinating and reviewing all tunnel excavations, installation of tunnel lining, grouting,and monitoring data and protection of building structures, surface facilities and subsurface utilityinfrastructure. They are directly responsible for, although not limited to, ensuring the safety of crew members,ensuring the productivity of crew members, following health and safety legislation and Company policies,procedures, and guidelines

Location

The position will be based on our project in Darlington, ON. The successful candidate will be local to Darlington, Oshawa or surrounding areas, or willing to relocate.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise all tunnel construction operations, ensuring adherence to project schedules, safety standards, and quality specifications.
  • Coordinate the planning, execution, and review of tunnel excavations, lining installations, grouting processes, and monitoring of environmental and structural integrity.
  • Collaborate with design teams to optimize tunnel construction methods for effectiveness and constructability.
  • Ensure timely documentation and submission of all construction records, reports, and compliance data.
  • Develop and implement work plans and safety procedures, proactively managing any deviations or risks encountered onsite.
  • Maintain continuous presence within the tunnel during active shifts to guide and support tunneling crews and equipment operators.
  • Oversee certification and training verification for all tunnel personnel to guarantee preparedness and competence on equipment and safety protocols.
  • Manage coordination between project engineers, surveyors, instrumentation specialists, subcontractors, and clients to promote seamless operational flow.
  • Drive compliance with all applicable labor agreements, union contracts, and legislative requirements, fostering a respectful and inclusive workplace.
  • Direct resource allocation including labor, equipment, and materials to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Generate and analyze progress reports, equipment usage data, and cost forecasts to align project execution with budgetary and timeline goals.
  • Ensure all project functions comply with company policies, health and safety regulations, and client specifications, leading initiatives to achieve zero-accident milestones.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive construction experience with a focus on tunnel projects involving both hard and soft rock environments.
  • At least 2-3 years of specialized experience managing tunneling operations and direct crew supervision.
  • Demonstrated success in leading multi-site construction teams and managing complex logistical challenges.
  • Experience operating and coordinating with tunnel boring machines and associated technologies.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with proven ability to inspire and maintain high-performing teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, enabling effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Capable of maintaining composure and efficiency in fast-paced, high-stakes environments.
  • Experience working within joint venture settings and familiarity with related contractual and labor relations frameworks.
  • Commitment to safety excellence and continuous professional development.
  • Willingness to adapt to evolving project demands including relocation and travel.

Base Compensation: 130,000/yr - $170,000/yr
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
