Position Overview

Kiewit is seeking an experienced Telecommunications Superintendent to lead field execution for telecommunications infrastructure on a large‑scale, mission‑critical data center project in Abilene, Texas. This role is responsible for the day‑to‑day supervision, coordination, and execution of telecom construction activities, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with Kiewit’s quality standards.

The Telecommunications Superintendent will work closely with Project Management, Engineering, Safety, and trade partners to deliver complex structured cabling and fiber systems in a fast‑paced, highly coordinated data center environment.

Location

This position will be based at one of our project sites across the U.S., with an office rotation at either our headquarters in Denver, CO or our area office in Lenexa, KS. Candidates must be open to relocating as needed.

Responsibilities

Field Leadership & Execution

  • Provide daily on‑site supervision of telecommunications construction activities, serving as the primary field leader for telecom scopes.
  • Plan, schedule, and execute work involving fiber optic and copper cabling, backbone systems, pathways, racks, cabinets, and equipment installation.
  • Coordinate telecom work with electrical, mechanical, controls, and general construction teams to ensure proper sequencing and conflict resolution.
  • Lead daily huddles, weekly look‑ahead planning, and manpower loading to meet aggressive project milestones.

Safety & Quality

  • Enforce Kiewit’s safety culture by leading safety meetings, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and ensuring compliance with OSHA, site‑specific, and client safety requirements.
  • Ensure all telecom installations meet project specifications, industry standards (BICSI, TIA/EIA, NEC), and owner requirements.
  • Conduct regular field inspections to verify workmanship, testing, labeling, and documentation standards.

Schedule, Cost & Productivity

  • Monitor productivity, manpower, and material usage to support cost control and schedule adherence.
  • Coordinate material deliveries and logistics to support just‑in‑time installation.
  • Assist with quantity tracking, progress reporting, and identification of potential impacts or changes.

Team & Trade Partner Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop foremen, technicians, and craft personnel.
  • Coordinate and oversee subcontractors and vendors performing telecom work.
  • Partner with Project Managers and Field Engineers to resolve field issues and drive solutions.

Client & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Interface with owners, commissioning teams, inspectors, and other stakeholders related to telecom scope.
  • Support testing, commissioning, and turnover activities to meet data center operational readiness requirements.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of experience supervising telecommunications or low‑voltage construction, preferably in data center or mission‑critical environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of fiber optic and structured cabling systems, including pathways, racks, cabinets, and testing requirements.
  • Proven ability to lead crews, coordinate trades, and execute work in fast‑paced, high‑accountability environments.
  • Strong understanding of construction safety, quality control, and schedule management.
  • Willingness to work project‑based in Abilene, Texas, with extended hours as required by project demands.

Preferred

  • Experience on hyperscale data center projects.
  • Familiarity with BICSI standards, testing protocols, and documentation.
  • Previous experience working with self‑perform teams and multiple trade partners.
  • Background working alongside electrical and controls teams on integrated systems.
