Position Overview

Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering (KIWE) is seeking Process Engineers to join our team with primary focus on the thermal Waste to Energy (WTE) market.  You will be part of our growing team that is developing environmentally sustainable solutions that seamlessly transition from design plans to completed projects to exceed client expectations and further Kiewit’s legacy of excellence.

The Gasification Process Engineer will provide technical and process engineering leadership for industrial WTE pursuits. These clean renewable energy solutions include chemical or thermal process technologies such as torrefaction, gasification, pyrolysis, etc.  Process feedstocks could include MSW, agricultural biomass, food waste, or other potential waste materials, and could produce syngas, renewable natural gas (RNG), biogas, hydrogen, black pellets, or other renewable fuels.  We are looking for candidates to grow the Kiewit team by helping establish, maintain, and improve company standards and tools while also utilizing these standards and tools to contribute to project success.

Clients are turning to Kiewit during all stages of design-build projects to lead and manage multi-disciplined design teams to work together to improve schedule, track design progress, control costs and minimize risk.  We are a high performing team of engineers and designers that leads the water engineering process and collaborates with Kiewit’s construction teams to approach construction-driven engineering with a focus on safe, cost effective, and innovative designs, all working to develop the best possible delivery of water facility projects to our clients.

Location

This position is located at our industrial hub in Lenexa, KS or one of our regional offices in Denver, CO, Houston, TX, Atlanta, GA, or Minneapolis, MN, and may require up to 20% travel on average based on project demands.  Remote work locations will be fairly considered but may require increased travel.
 

Responsibilities

Provide design input for various utilities systems typical for district energy, campus utility, combined heat and power, or other industrial facilities with specific experience in the following: steam heating, hot water, and chilled water systems, thermal distribution systems, distribution tunnels, and the associated interface with end users.
•    Perform early project design work such as conceptual studies, process flow diagram development, mass/energy balances, preliminary equipment sizing and selection, and general facility layout/arrangement.
•    Generate and check design deliverables such as PFD’s, P&ID’s, datasheets, and vendor shop drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
•    Prepare equipment specifications and detailed technical bid analyses for typical district energy, campus utility, or combined heat and power equipment including but not limited to boilers, chillers, turbines, pumps, valves, and other equipment typical for utilities systems.
•    Support the construction team including representing the design team on-site, answering RFI’s, providing creative design solutions, etc.
•    Coordinate, communicate, and oversee all aspects of the project’s utilities systems design with other design partners (both internal and external) including construction partners, equipment suppliers, and other engineers and designers.
•    Train, mentor, and advise peers and support staff on proper application of district energy, campus utility, and combined heat and power industry standards and best practices.
•    Provide key input and oversight for all district energy, campus utility, and combined heat and power scopes throughout project development, estimating, project execution, and startup/commissioning.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent engineering program from an ABET accredited four-year university.
•    A broad understanding of district energy, campus utility, and combined heat and power technologies and the market overall.
•    Experience with thermal distribution system design associated with district energy, campus utility, and combined heat and power facilities.
•    A minimum of 7 years of industry related engineering experience.
•    Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred.
•    System operations and/or commissioning experience is favorable.
